Johanna Beekman singer songwriter kirtan artist yoga teacher

  • Kirtan

Johanna Beekman is a multi-genre recording artist, songstress, and kirtan leader who is  loved for her rich, soulful voice, her radiant spirit, and her evocative, inspiring songs and devotional chants that tap deep into the collective soul. She is equally comfortable performing sacred kirtan music for yoga festivals and classes, rhythmic world-beat grooves for dancers, and soulful ballads for concert audiences. Johanna’s music is central to movement-meditation-based RhythmAsana workshops and her own unique Lullaby Yoga classes.

Heart Beats One, Johanna’s first album of original kirtan music from the traditions of yoga, features guest appearances by Ben Leinbach, Benjy Wertheimer, Girish, Jaya Lakshmi, Ananda, Gina Sala, Daniel Paul, Hans Christian, Bibi McGill, and other esteemed members of the global kirtan community. The album, which was nominated as one of the top Conscious Music Albums of 2015 by Soul Traveler Radio, has been described by reviewers, musicians, and kirtan enthusiasts as stellar… stunning… gorgeous… beautiful… magical… mystical… sweet… healing… haunting… amazing… extraordinary…. It shines from beginning to end.

Her brand new album Beyond Love: Soothing Songs for the Soul ventures even deeper into the heart space beyond love. Inspired by her beloved Lullaby Yoga classes, the album creates a sacred soundscape that’s ideal for gentle yoga, quiet chanting, meditation, deep rest, massage, acupuncture, therapeutic movement, and other healing modalities. Beyond Love was produced by award-winning producer Ben Leinbach and features gorgeous guest appearances by Donna DeLory, Girish, Hans Christian, Lee Mirabal Harrington, Jared May, and Gawain Matthews.

In the non-kirtan world, Johanna’s work has taken on a life of its own. Her ability to create unforgettable songs in almost any genre is well-documented in her previous recordings, including  The Edge of Divine. And her a cappella anthem Free to Decide (Breathe) has been performed by ensembles and choirs across North America.

    Festival of Colors

    Festival of Colors

I had the honor of welcoming the spring this year in a truly memorable, vivid and joy-filled event. I performed and celebrated along with 37,000 others at the Holi Hai Festival of Colors in Spanish Fork, Utah. People of all ages and backgrounds gathered to sing and dance and revel in bright primary colors, dowsing each other with chalk-based powder. The overall energy was indescribable. Imagine moving to high-energy beats of kirtan and sacred music, eating vegan Indian food, and watching peacocks display their plumage. That’s just a start.

Festival Owner Caru Das Introducing Johanna at the Main Stage

One of the best parts is that tickets are only $5.00, plus the cost of colorful powders and food. Last week’s festival was timed to coincide with Holi Hai, a holiday celebrating the arrival of spring and the passing of winter in India.

But the fun isn’t over yet. The event was the first in the US Festival of Colors Tour, which I’ll be joining monthly in various locations on the West coast: Las Vegas (Apr. 15th), Salt Lake City (June 10th), Reno (Aug. 19th), Sacramento (Sept. 30th), and Santa Cruz (Oct. 7th). Check out all the dates and places and see amazing video footage here:
